  1. Anjum-Divyansh win all-Indian shootout for World Cup gold

Divyansh Singh Panwar and Anjum Moudgil won their second successive ISSF World Cup gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle mixed event in Munich. The duo defeated compatriots Apurvi Chandela and Deepak Kumar. Meanwhile, India’s Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary won their third straight World Cup gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event.

  1. Flipkart Co-founder Sachin Bansal joins Ujjivan Bank’s board

Co-founder and ex-CEO of homegrown e-commerce giant Flipkart, Sachin Bansal, has joined the board of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank as an independent director. Ujjivan had recently also appointed HDFC Bank’s former digital banking head Nitin Chugh as its next CEO. Ujjivan MD Samit Ghosh revealed the bank is trying to scale up and turn into a mass market bank.

  1. PM Modi, Sri Lankan President Sirisena hold bilateral talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Friday. The meeting took place a day after Sirisena, along with leaders from fellow member-states of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation), attended PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.

  1. Govt forms new Jal Shakti Ministry, Gajendra Shekhawat to head it

The government has created the new Ministry of Jal Shakti by reorganising the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Member of Parliament from Jodhpur, will head the ministry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised during the Lok Sabha election campaign to create an integrated ministry to deal with all matters related to water.

  1. 8 kids win US Spelling Bee for 1st time; 6 are of Indian-origin

A record number of eight children were crowned winners of the US’ Scripps National Spelling Bee, with 6 of them being of Indian-origin. Organisers announced it was a tie as they had run out of words, in what was a first since the contest started in 1925. Each winner received a cash prize of $50,000 (over 334.86 lakh).

  1. Admiral Karambir Singh assumes charge as Chief of the Naval Staff

Admiral Karambir Singh has assumed charge as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff. “My predecessors made sure that Navy has a solid foundation and has reached new heights,” he said. “It’ll be my endeavour to continue with their efforts and provide India with a Navy that’s strong, credible and ready to meet security challenge in maritime domain,” Singh added.

 

  1. World No-Tobacco Day: 31st May

Every year, on 31st May, the World Health Organization (WHO) and global partners celebrate World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). The annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.

The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is on “tobacco and lung health.”

  1. Nirmala becomes first full-time female Finance Minister of India

Nirmala Sitharaman has become the first full-time female Finance Minister of India, replacing Arun Jaitley who had opted out of the new Cabinet because of health issues. In 2017, she had also become the first full-time female Defence Minister of India. Indira Gandhi had briefly taken additional charge of Finance and Defence ministries during her tenure as Prime Minister.

  1. FICCI survey forecasts India’s GDP growth at 7.1% for FY20

The country’s median GDP is forecast at 7.10 percent for Financial Year 2020 and 7.20 percent for Financial Year 2021. The industry body FICCI’s economic outlook survey stated that the minimum and maximum growth estimate stood at 6.80 per Ocent and 7.3 percent for 2019-20.

The survey was conducted in May 2019 among economists belonging to the industry, banking, and financial services sectors. Inflation is expected to remain moderate and the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation rate is projected at 3.1 percent in 2019-20, While, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation has a median forecast of 4 percent for 2019-20.

 

  1. Mohana Singh becomes 1st woman fighter pilot to fly Hawk jet

Flight Lieutenant Mohana Singh has become the first woman fighter pilot to be qualified to undertake missions by day on Hawk advanced jet aircraft, an official statement said. Her training involved flying both air-to-air combat and air-to-ground missions. She has a total of over 500 hours of incident-free flying of which 380 hours are on the Hawk Mk 132 jet.

  1. US puts 5% tariff on Mexican goods until it solves immigration issue

US President Donald Trump has announced a tariff of 5% on all goods from Mexico starting June in a bid to pressure the country to resolve the issue of illegal immigration to the US through its border. The tariff will increase up to 25% until the problem is resolved, he added. The duties will gradually increase by 5% every month.
