  1. India and ADB Sign $26 million loan agreement for additional financing to Assam Urban Project

The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed in New Delhi a $26 Million Loan Agreement to provide additional financing for improving drainage infrastructure in Dibrugarh town of Assam under the ongoing Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Program

Mr. Hoe Yun Jeong, OIC, India Resident Mission signed the Agreement on behalf of ADB and Mr. Sameer Kumar Khare, Additional Secretary (Fund Bank and ADB), Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance signed on behalf of India.

  1. RBI levies 71 cr fine on 36 banks over software misused in PNB scam

The RBI on Friday said it has levied penalties totalling 371 crore on 36 banks for not complying with directions primarily on linking SWIFT financial messaging platform to their core banking software. PNB employees had exploited this loophole for facilitating alleged fraudulent transactions worth over $2 billion. The penalties ranged from 1 crore to 74 crore for each bank.

  1. Kerala’s Marayoor Jaggery gets Geographical Indication tag

Idukki’s The Marayoor Jaggery, the traditional and handmade product from Idukki district of Kerala received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Central Government.

The Marayoor jaggery finally managed to get the GI Tag after two years of continuous efforts by the Agricultural Department of the state. The GI tag will provide more windows of opportunity to the traditional sugarcane farmers in Marayoor.

  1. Subhash Chandra Garg sppointed as finance secretary

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved designating Shri Subhash Chandra Garg, IAS, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance as Finance Secretary.

Former finance secretary Ajay Narayan Jha superannuated on February 28. Garg, 58, a 1983 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, has been working as the Secretary in Department of Economic Affairs since June 2017.

  1. Mizoram Cabinet approves Liquor Prohibition Bill

The Mizoram Cabinet on Friday approved the proposed Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Bill, 2019, officials said. Liquor was prohibited in the state from 1997 till January 2015 with the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act in force. The previous Congress government had allowed opening of wine shops in the state from March 2015.


  1. ISRO, French Space Agency sign agreement on maritime security

National space agency ISRO and its French counterpart CNES sealed an agreement to set up a joint maritime surveillance system in the country in May. K.Sivan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, and Jean-Yves Le Gall, President of CNES of France, signed the agreement in Bengaluru.

The two nations will explore putting up a constellation of low-Earth orbiting satellites that will identify and track the movement of ships globally – and in particular, those moving in the Indian Ocean region where France has its Reunion Islands.

  1. India, Costa Rica sign 2 documents during Venkaiah Naidu’s visit

India and Costa Rica signed two documents during Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s first visit to the Central American nation. The documents were signed and exchanged following talks between Naidu and Costa Rican President Carlos Alvarado Quesada.

The 2 agreements were signed on waiving visa requirements for Diplomatic and Official passport holders and the signing of the Letter of Intent to collaborate in the field of Biotechnology.

  1. United Bank, HDFC Life sign bancassurance deal

United Bank of India has signed a bancassurance deal with private life insurer HDFC Life Insurance Company. Through this partnership, United Bank’s customers will be able to take advantage of HDFC Life’s expertise in life insurance products, distribution and customer service.

United Bank has a strong presence in rural and semi-urban areas, with over 2,000 branches and offices, while HDFC Life is India’s largest non-bank-promoted private life insurer.

  1. PM Modi flags off Delhi Metro’s Blue Line extension in Noida

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Noida City Centre-Noida Electronic City section of Delhi Metro’s Blue Line via remote on Saturday. The 6.6-km-long extension comprises six stations, Sector 34, Sector 52, Sector 61, Sector 59, Sector 62 and Noida Electronic City, all of which are elevated. Metro services on the extended line will begin at 4 pm on Saturday.

  1. Scientist Ajit Kumar Mohanty appointed as chief of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre

Distinguished scientist Ajit Kumar Mohanty was on appointed Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the country’s premier multi-disciplinary nuclear research facility.

Mohanty has been appointed Director, BARC for a period of three years. He is at present Director, Physics Group in BARC and Director, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics.
