  1. World Bank offers 960 сr to modernise 220 dams in 6 states

The World Bank has provided additional financing of $137 million (nearly 3960 crore) for the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP) to rehabilitate and modernise over 220 selected large dams in six states. The dams are located in Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand. Previously, the bank approved $350 million to finance DRIP in 2010.

  1. IIT Madras to make device to produce potable water from air

IIT Madras has teamed up with sustainable technology company Teerthaa to create a device that can produce potable water from atmospheric air. The device named ‘NERO’, that will be powered by solar thermal energy, will produce 4 to 5 litres of potable water per day. “The collaboration is expected to impact persons isolated from conventional water sources,” an IIT-Madras professor said.

  1. EVMs in LS polls to have candidate’s pic to avoid confusion

The Election Commission announced that during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, all EVMs will carry photographs of candidates to avoid confusion over similar names. The photograph will be printed on the EVM ballot units as well as on postal ballot papers. India had gone to polls with Photo Electoral Rolls for the first time in 2009, EC added.

  1. Govt sells entire stake in Dredging Corp for 1,049 crore

The government has sold its entire 73.47% holding in the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) to stateowned Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Paradip Port Trust, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and Deendayal Port Trust for 71,049 crore. Following the sale, the government’s FY19 disinvestment proceeds reached over 756,473 crore. The government has a target of 380,000 crore from sell-offs for this year.

  1. 4 Indians among 157 killed in Ethiopian Airlines crash identified

Four Indian nationals who were killed in Kenya-bound Ethiopian Airlines flight crash that killed all 157 people aboard on Sunday were identified as Vaidya Pannagesh Bhaskar, Vaidya Hansin Annagesh, Nukavarapu Manisha and Shikha Garg. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said Garg was a Consultant with Ministry of Environment and Forests. She was travelling to attend UNEP meeting in Nairobi.

 

  1. AP, Arunachal, Sikkim & Odisha to have Assembly polls with LS polls

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora on Sunday announced that Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh will be held simultaneously with the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He further said that state elections in Jammu & Kashmir will not take place simultaneously with the General elections due to the prevailing situation in the state.
