  1. Mother’s day 2020 observed on 10 May

Mother’s day is celebrated on every second Sunday of May month and this year, it’s falling on 10th May 2020. Mother’s Day is widely known to salute the motherhood, to extend the influence of mothers within the society, to extend the maternal bonds to children, etc. Mother, being a protector throughout her life loves her children unconditionally. She plays a special role sort of a teacher, best friend and one’s who besides us under all circumstances.

In 1908, Mother’s Day was first celebrated, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia to honour her mother. In 1905, Her campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday in the United States began, It was the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis died. Anna Jarvis was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared second Sunday of May as an official holiday in the United States.

  1. WHO, UN’s release postage stamp on 40th anniversary of smallpox eradication

The World Health Organization (WHO) and therefore the United Nation (UN) postal agency released commemorative Postage Stamp on the 40th anniversary of the eradication of smallpox. The commemorative stamp was designed and developed by Sergio Baradat, United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) together with WHO.

The stamp serves to honour the millions of people working together, from world leaders and international organizations to rural doctors and community doctors to eradicate smallpox. Tedros Adhanom expressed his gratitude to a top Indian-origin Atul Khare for creating this commemorative stamp possible. Born in India, Khare is that the Under-Secretary-General for the Department of Operational Support (DOS) and therefore the UN Postal Administration is within the DOS Division of Administration.

  1. India starts “Mission Sagar” to assist island nations in EIO

The Government of India has started “Mission Sagar” on 10 May 2020 to provide assistance to Eastern Indian Ocean Region Nations amid the corona virus crisis. Under the mission, Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kesari has been deployed, carrying on board two medical assistance teams, essential Food Items and COVID related Medicines and Special Ayurvedic Medicines five to Island countries in the Indian Ocean. The five countries are Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Comoros.

The mission is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region). The operation is being progressed in close coordination with Ministries of Defence and External Affairs.

  1. FIH extends Narinder Batra term as President till 2021

International Hockey Federation (FIH) has extended the term of Narinder Batra as President of FIH until May 2021. Batra and therefore the Executive Board members which were due to end in October 2020 have now been extended.

The Executive Board (EB) of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has also decided to postpone the 47th FIH Congress, initially planned on 28 October-1 November 2020 in New Delhi, to May 2021.

  1. Eminent historian Hari Shankar Vasudevan passes away

Eminent historian Hari Shankar Vasudevan passed away due to COVID-19. He was internationally acclaimed for his work on Russian and European history and Indo-Russian relations.

Vasudevan was the author of Shadows of Substance: Indo-Russian Trade and Military-Technical Cooperation (2010), and Footsteps of Afanasii Nikitin: Travels through Eurasia and India in the Early 21st Century (2015). He was an eminent scholar, UGC Emeritus Professor, Department of History and China Centre of Calcutta University as well as Ex-Director of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies, an autonomous body under Ministry of Culture Govt of India.”

  1. India celebrates National Technology Day on 11th May

National Technology Day is celebrated on 11 May across India. This day marks the successfully tested ShaktiI nuclear missile at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. This day will be focusing on rebooting the economy through Science and Technology.

Every year, National Technology Day is celebrated across India on 11 May to memorize the anniversary of Shakti, the Pokhran nuclear test held on 11 May 1998. Shakti also knows as the Pokhran Nuclear Test was the first nuclear test code-named ‘Smiling Buddha’ was carried out in May 1974.

The second test was then conducted as Pokhran II which was a series of five tests of nuclear bomb explosions carried out by India at the Pokhran Test Range of Indian Army in May 1998. This operation administered by late president and aerospace engineer Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. All these nuclear tests evolved various sanctions against India by many major countries, including the United States and Japan. After the test, India becomes a nuclear state thus making it the sixth country in the world that has joined the nations “nuclear club”.

विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (WHO) और यूनाइटेड नेशन (UN) की डाक एजेंसी ने चेचक के उन्मूलन की 40 वीं वर्षगांठ पर स्मारक डाक टिकट जारी किया। स्मारक डाक टिकट डब्ल्यूएचओ के साथ संयुक्त राष्ट्र डाक प्रशासन (UNPA) सर्जियो बाराडाट द्वारा डिजाइन और विकसित किया गया था।

स्टाम्प विश्व नेताओं और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संगठनों से लेकर ग्रामीण डॉक्टरों और सामुदायिक डॉक्टरों तक, चेचक के उन्मूलन के लिए एक साथ काम करने वाले लाखों लोगों को सम्मानित करने का कार्य करता है। टेड्रोस अढानोम ने इस स्मारक टिकट को संभव बनाने के लिए एक शीर्ष भारतीय मूल के अतुल खरे का आभार व्यक्त किया। भारत में जन्मे खरे का कहना है कि ऑपरेशनल सपोर्ट डिपार्टमेंट (DOS) के अंडर सेक्रेटरी जनरल हैं और इसलिए UN पोस्टल एडमिनिस्ट्रेशन DOS डिवीजन ऑफ एडमिनिस्ट्रेशन के भीतर है।

  1. भारत ने EIO में द्वीप देशों की सहायता के लिए “मिशन सागर” शुरू किया

भारत सरकार ने कोरोना वायरस के संकट के बीच पूर्वी हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र राष्ट्रों को सहायता प्रदान करने के लिए 10 मई 2020 को “मिशन सागर” शुरू किया है। मिशन के तहत, इंडियन नेवल शिप (INS) केसरी को तैनात किया गया है, जो दो मेडिकल सहायता टीमों, आवश्यक खाद्य पदार्थों और COVID से संबंधित दवाओं और विशेष आयुर्वेदिक दवाओं को लेकर हिंद महासागर में पाँच द्वीप देशों तक रहा है। पांच देश मालदीव, मॉरीशस, सेशेल्स, मेडागास्कर और कोमोरोस हैं।

मिशन प्रधान मंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के एसएजीएआर (सुरक्षा और क्षेत्र में सभी के लिए विकास) के दृष्टिकोण से प्रेरित है। रक्षा और विदेश मामलों के मंत्रालयों के साथ निकट समन्वय में ऑपरेशन को आगे बढ़ाया जा रहा है।

  1. FIH ने 2021 तक अध्यक्ष के रूप में नरिंदर बत्रा का कार्यकाल बढ़ाया

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हॉकी महासंघ (FIH) ने मई 2021 तक FIH के अध्यक्ष के रूप में नरिंदर बत्रा का कार्यकाल बढ़ाया है। बत्रा और कार्यकारी मंडल के सदस्यों का कार्यकाल जो अक्टूबर 2020 में समाप्त होने वाला था, अब बढ़ा दिए गया है।

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हॉकी महासंघ (एफआईएच) के कार्यकारी बोर्ड (ईबी) ने 47 वीं एफआईएच कांग्रेस को स्थगित करने का भी फैसला किया है, जिसे 28 अक्टूबर -1 नवंबर 2020 को नई दिल्ली में होने वाली थी अब मई 2021 को आयोजित की जाएगी।

COVID-19 के कारण प्रख्यात इतिहासकार हरि शंकर वासुदेवन का निधन हो गया। रूसी और यूरोपीय इतिहास और भारत-रूस संबंधों पर उनके काम के लिए उन्हें अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर सराहना मिली।

  1. भारत में 11 मई को राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी दिवस मनाया गया

पूरे भारत में 11 मई को राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी दिवस मनाया जाता है। यह दिन राजस्थान में भारतीय सेना की पोखरण टेस्ट रेंज में शक्ति परीक्षण में सफल परमाणु मिसाइल का प्रतीक है। यह दिन विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी के माध्यम से अर्थव्यवस्था को फिर से संगठित करने पर केंद्रित होगा।

शक्ति की वर्षगांठ को याद करने के लिए हर साल 11 मई को पूरे भारत में राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी दिवस मनाया जाता है, 11 मई 1998 को आयोजित पोखरण परमाणु परीक्षण शक्ति पोखरण परमाणु परीक्षण पहला परमाणु परीक्षण कोड था जिसका नाम ‘स्माइलिंग बुद्धा’ था, जो मई 1974 में किया गया था।

दूसरा परीक्षण तब पोखरण II के रूप में किया गया था जो मई 1998 में भारतीय सेना के पोखरण टेस्ट रेंज में भारत द्वारा किए गए परमाणु बम विस्फोटों की पांच परीक्षणों की एक श्रृंखला थी। इस ऑपरेशन का संचालन दिवंगत राष्ट्रपति और एयरोस्पेस इंजीनियर डॉ. एपीपी अब्दुल कलाम ने किया था। इन सभी परमाणु परीक्षणों ने संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका और जापान सहित कई प्रमुख देशों द्वारा भारत के खिलाफ विभिन्न प्रतिबंधों को विकसित किया। परीक्षण के बाद, भारत एक परमाणु राज्य बन गया और इस तरह यह दुनिया का छठा देश बन गया, जो राष्ट्रों में “परमाणु क्लब” में शामिल हुआ।
