  1. International Tea Day observed globally on 21 May

International Tea Day is observed globally May 21 on the recommendation of India. The purpose of International Tea Day is to try to improve the condition of tea producers and tea workers. Tea producing countries make a lot of profit but the condition of the labourers working in the tea plantations is very bad. Therefore, the purpose of International Tea Day is to encourage the status of tea workers, workers’ rights, daily wages, social security, employment security, and health.

The United Nations General Assembly has designated May 21 as International Tea Day based on a proposal moved by India at the FAO Intergovernmental Group (IGG) on Tea in October 2015. Before 2019, December 15 is celebrated as International Tea Day in tea producing nations such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Uganda, India and Tanzania.

  1. Dilip Oommen becomes new President of Indian Steel Association

Indian Steel Association (ISA) has appointed Dilip Oommen as its new President. He is presently the CEO of Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India. He was unanimously appointed as President for the next two years. He will replace Tata Steel CEO TV Narendran, who stepped down as President on May 1. Oommen is a veteran of the steel industry with more than 37 years of experience and an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-K)

  1. Union HRD Ministry launches new mobile app “National Test Abhyas”

The Ministry of Human Resources Development has launched a new mobile application called “National Test Abhyas”. The application was developed by the National Testing Agency

The application will help the candidates to take mock tests for exams such as JEE Mains, NEET, etc. The application is powered by Artificial Intelligence and therefore the students will get instant results after taking the tests. The main aim of the application is to help students during the closure of educational institutions.

  1. Vice Admiral Vinay Badhwar wins Alexander Dalrymple Award 2019

India’s Chief Hydrographer of Indian Naval Hydrographic, Vice Admiral Vinay Badhwar has been awarded the Alexander Dalrymple Award 2019. This award is given to him for his outstanding contribution to Indian hydrography and across the broader Indian Ocean region. The award was presented by the UK Ministry of Defence. The recipients of the award are selected by the chief Committee of the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) for his or her efforts in raising the standards of hydrography, cartography and navigation around the world.

Vice Admiral Vinay Badhwar joined the Indian Navy in 1982. He leads the regional Capacity Building programmes of Indian Naval Hydrographic Office (INHO). In 2019, He honoured with Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for “distinguished service of an exceptional order during peacetime”. He has been the member of the International Hydrographic Organisations (IHO’s) Capacity Building SubCommittee since its creation.

  1. WHO to initiate Independent Inquiry in handling of COVID-19

The World Health Organisation will be initiating Independent Inquiry in the handling of COVID-19. In order to achieve this, the organization is to launch “Resolution on COVID-19 response”. The main aim of the review is to put an end to the international blame game in the origin of COVID-19. The resolution was taken at the 73rd World Health Assembly that was held through video conference. India was represented by the Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan.

Around 116 countries backed the resolution of independent review. India backed the resolution. The idea of the resolution was initiated by Australia. However, the resolution was drafted by the European Union. China opposed the resolution.

  1. India gives $2 million aid to UN agency for Palestinian refugees’ welfare

India has provided USD 2 million aid for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency working for the welfare of Palestinian refugees. This aid is given for UNRWA core programmes and services, including education and health, amidst the coronavirus crisis. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) applauded India’s support to stay its basic services operating, especially under the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

India has increased the annual contribution to the UNRWA from 1.25 million USD(Rs.9.45 crore) to five million USD (Rs. 37 crore) in 2019 and promised another 5 million USD(Rs. 37 crores) for 2020 this opens a chance for India to become a member of the agency’s advisory commission. The contribution was presented to the United Nations agency by the Representative of India (ROI) to the State of Palestine, Sunil Kumar. The UNRWA supports the Palestinians who fled and were expelled from their homes during the war in 1948.

World Metrology Day is observed globally on 20th May every year. Many nations on this day, internationally collaborate to create awareness about metrology and its advancement in the respective field.

This year theme for World Metrology Day: Measurements for global trade. This theme was chosen to create awareness of the important role measurement plays in facilitating fair global trade, ensuring products meet standards and regulations, and satisfying customer quality expectations.

World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 in Paris, France by representatives of seventeen nations. The World Metrology Day project is realized jointly by the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) and Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM).

  1. DGDE & eGov Foundation partners for Online Management of Cantonment Boards

The Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE), Ministry of Defence and eGov Foundation has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Online Management of Cantonment Boards. Both entities will work together to drive e-governance and enhance citizen services across all cantonment boards in the country. These services will be delivered under a cloud-based platform DIGIT (Digital Infrastructure for Governance, Impact & Transformation). These services will be provided under the program named e-Chhawani.

All the services will be provided through India’s Largest Open Source Platform for Urban Governance i.e. DIGIT. This platform includes Dashboards, Web Portals, Miscellaneous Collection, Trade License, Fire NoC system, Public Grievance Redressal System, Property Tax, Water & Sewerage Charges, Online Building Permission System & Finance & Accounting System. Hence, this will lead to improved delivery of services via multiple channels and ease of access of all Cantonment Board-related information online.

भारत की सिफारिश पर अंतर्राष्ट्रीय चाय दिवस 21 मई को मनाया जाता है। अंतर्राष्ट्रीय चाय दिवस का उद्देश्य चाय उत्पादकों और चाय श्रमिकों की स्थिति में सुधार करने का प्रयास करना है। चाय उत्पादक देश बहुत लाभ कमाते हैं लेकिन चाय बागानों में काम करने वाले मजदूरों की हालत बहुत खराब है। इसलिए, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय चाय दिवस का उद्देश्य चाय श्रमिकों, श्रमिकों के अधिकारों, दैनिक मजदूरी, सामाजिक सुरक्षा, रोजगार सुरक्षा और स्वास्थ्य की स्थिति को प्रोत्साहित करना है।
