  1. Ravneet Gill to replace Rana Kapoor as YES Bank’s MD and CEO

Deutsche Bank’s India Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ravneet Singh Gill will replace Rana Kapoor as YES Bank’s Managing Director and CEO, the private lender announced on Thursday. Gill will join the company on or before March 1, 2019, the bank added. The announcement comes after the Reserve Bank of India asked Kapoor to step down by January 31, 2019.

  1. India’s Growth to accelerate from 7.4% to 7.6% in FY20: UN report

With robust private consumption and 7.4% GDP growth rate in the current fiscal, the Indian economy is expected to accelerate at a rate of 7.6% in 2019-20, according to a report by the United Nations titled United Nations’ World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2019. As per the report, the world trade growth moderated over the course of 2018 to 3.8% from growth of 5.3% in 2017.

  1. DRDO successfully test-fires Barak 8 LRSAM missile

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully test-fired Barak 8 LRSAM (Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile) from naval warship INS Chennai off the coast of Odisha. “The missile (directly) hit a low flying aerial target”, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tweeted. The Barak 8 LRSAM missile defence system has been jointly developed by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries.

  1. Piyush Goyal named interim Finance Minister

Piyush Goyal has been named the interim Finance Minister and interim Minister of Corporate Affairs during Arun Jaitley’s indisposition. Goyal will retain his existing portfolios of coal and railways.

Union Minister Arun Jaitley, 66, had left for the United States for a regular medical check-up. Jaitley will be designated as a minister without a portfolio during his period of indisposition.

  1. TAFTX 2019: India Africa Field Training Exercise held in Pune

The final planning conference to work out the modalities for Indian Africa Field Training Exercise (IAFTX)-2019 was conducted at Pune, Maharashtra. Delegates from Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, South Africa, Tanzania, Namibia, Mozambique, Uganda, Niger & Zambia attended the conference.

The joint training exercise is being conducted with more than a dozen African countries & India. It aims at synergysing humanitarian mine action and joint peace operations. The initial planning conference for the exercise was held in December 2018.

  1. Sultan Abdullah elected new Malaysian king

Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah was on Thursday elected as Malaysia’s new king by the members of the country’s royal families. The 59-year-old was earlier appointed the Sultan of the Malaysian state of Pahang. He replaces Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, who stepped down earlier this month, making it the first abdication in Malaysia’s history.

  1. PM Modi launched Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana under which a group of Indian diaspora will be taken on a government-sponsored tour of religious places in India twice a year.

The first batch of 40 Indian-origin people are at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and from here they will begin their tour. They will be taken to religious places of all major religions in India and the government will bear all the expenses including the airfare from their country of residence.

  1. Baramulla becomes 1st J&K district with no surviving militant: DGP

A day after security forces killed three terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, state DGP Dilbag Singh on Thursday announced Baramulla as “the first district of Kashmir with no surviving militant, as on date”. The killed terrorists were affiliated with terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. In 2018, encounters between security forces and terrorists were witnessed in 12 of J&K’s 22 districts.

  1. Global Investors Summit held in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Government organised the 2nd edition of Global Investor summit in Chennai. The state government would soon unveil e-vehicle policy to give a boost to electric vehicles manufacturing in the state.

In the opening ceremony, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was the chief guest. She assured the Centre’s fullest cooperation to the state in its march towards progress. Tamil Nadu government has allocated nearly Rs 75 crores to conduct the event.

  1. Martyred terrorist-turned-soldier Nazir Wani to get Ashoka Chakra

Lance Naik Nazir Wani, who joined Indian Army giving up terrorism in 2004, will be awarded Ashoka Chakra, highest peacetime gallantry award, posthumously on Republic Day. The 38-year-old lost his life in November. “Wani exhibited the most conspicuous gallantry in personality eliminating two terrorists… assisting… evacuation of his wounded colleagues and made supreme sacrifice,” a statement read.

  1. Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba commissioned new Naval Air Base ‘INS Kohassa’

Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba commissioned the new Naval Air Base ‘INS Kohassa’ at Diglipur in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The airbase will be used to handle operations of helicopters and small aircraft like the Dornier. The new airbase in the northernmost part of the Andaman Nicobar Islands will be used for both Defence and civil aircraft.
