  1. Govt merges NSSO, CSO in a major overhaul of statistical system

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has decided to merge Central Statistics Office (CSO) and National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) to form a National Statistical Office (NSO) in a major restructuring move. While NSSO comes out with sample surveys on consumption, expenditure, employment and unemployment, the CSO releases data on GDP, inflation and IIP.

  1. Bayern Munich win German Cup by defeat Leipzig by 3-0

Bayern Munich completed a domestic double after beating Leipzig 3-0 in the German Cup final on Saturday. Bayern’s Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery went on late to make their last appearances for Bayern after representing the club for 10 and 12 seasons respectively. Ribery became the only player to play in eight German Cup finals.

  1. NTPC profit rises 49% to 34,350 crore in March quarter

State-run power generator NTPC on Saturday reported a profit of 34,350 for the March quarter, a nearly 49% rise from the corresponding quarter last year. The company’s profit for 2018-19 jumped over 20% year-on-year to 312,633 crore. The gross power generation of the NTPC Group in FY19 was 305.90 billion units as against 294.27 billion units during the previous fiscal.

  1. Indian Army officer appointed head of UN Mission in South Sudan

Lieutenant General Shailesh Tinaikar has been appointed as the new Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He served in the UN Angola Verification Mission III from 1996 to 1997, and in the UN Mission in Sudan from 2008 to 2009. Lieutenant General Tinaikar is currently Commandant of The Infantry School.

  1. Narendra Modi to take oath as Prime Minister at 7 pm on May 30

Narendra Modi will take oath as the Prime Minister for a second straight term at 7 pm on May 30 (Thursday). The members of Union Council of Ministers will also be sworn in along with Modi at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The BJP-led NDA won 353 out of 542 Lok Sabha seats that were contested in the elections.

  1. L&T buys shares worth 316 cr rupees in Mindtree, hikes stake by 2%

L&T raised its stake in IT firm Mindtree by about 2% between last week by picking up shares worth over 316 rupees crore in tranches. Post the transactions, the infrastructure major took its overall shareholding in the Bengaluru-based company to 28.45%. L&T Group Chairman AM Naik recently said the Mindtree acquisition is currently the topmost agenda for the company.
